Elk Crossing Fail

I managed to capture this video about the same place as the stampede in the previous post. A bit choppy in the beginning as I was driving with one hand and filming with the other. It gets calmer as time goes on.

Its a wonder that their necks weren’t broken.

Nice Rack

Kelly’s brother and his family drove all the way out here to visit with us for a few days. One night while we were out on the patio watching the sun go down, a small herd of Whitetail does came wandering in about 100 feet away from the front porch. While this is a regular occurrence for us, they don’t get to see deer up close very often. This night was even better because a young buck came in after the rest of them. You can see the velvet on his rack. Its not quite hunting season yet, but i think this one might be a good one to harvest….from the porch!

A New Visitor

Yesterday while doing some chores, i managed to almost step on what i thought was a dove of some kind near the shed. It startled me so bad that my heart jumped into my throat. It landed about 10 feet away. Then i heard this sound come from the other side of the shed. When i looked there were about 6 of them walking around slowly, like they were bird-ninjas sneaking up on me near the back of the house.

Turns out there was a female adult leading some juveniles around. After consulting the Idaho bird book, they are called “Ruffed Grouse”, and apparently, they’re also very good to eat. Will have to make a note of that for any future encounters.
